‘More lives will be lost’ unless A1 safety improves, councillor warns
Councillor calls for urgent closure of central reservation gaps between Stamford and Newark
More lives will be lost unless urgent action is taken to improve safety on the A1, a South Kesteven district councillor has warned.
Coun Elvis Stooke (Independent – Belmont) has called on National Highways to close the remaining central reservation gaps along the route as soon as possible.
National Highways has closed 14 gaps, but 41 remain open between Stamford and Newark.
Coun Stooke said: “I think now is the time to say, look, with immediate effect we need to close these A1 gaps now because I don’t want to see any more deaths.”
He also suggested introducing temporary speed restrictions while longer-term safety measures are considered.
National Highways route manager Phil Shaw said safety remained its focus and plans for further gap closures were progressing.
He said the process was “complex” and that extensive surveys and potential designs were being prepared for consultation.
National Highways identified 59 gaps between Stamford and Blyth. Of these, 14 have been closed, with investigations continuing into the remaining 45.
