A charity in Stamford says people are “at breaking point” as money struggles across the community get worse.

Many people have just reached the end of what they can cope with

St George’s Church runs a scheme to support people facing issues such as debt, homelessness and heating their homes.

But the charity says times have become so hard there’s now a waiting list for debt support.

Louise Rose from the charity says it’s become too easy for people to fall into arrears:

The finances, they just don't stretch

“There is always a steady stream of people who need support, especially with finances becoming tighter, so we find people have got less expendable income."

"The moment that people have to start putting their heating on it changes everything — that is a vast amount of money, and then the cost of food ever increasing."

"The finances, they just don't stretch.”

She says the impact can be devastating:

“It only takes you to lose your job. There's no backup. People don't have savings anymore, so that moment that you have to take out a loan, it's just a never ending cycle."

"What you find is that lots of people who come and see us feel alone."

"They feel like they're doing this huge battle and they're on their own."

"Many people we see are suicidal. Many people have just reached the end of what they can cope with.”

As winter approaches, St George’s Church is urging anyone struggling with debt, housing or heating to reach out for help before reaching crisis point.
