A Peterborough charity says the welfare cuts are unfair on people with disabilities

It's after the spring statement that heard Rachel Reeves announce the latest changes to welfare spending

A disability charity in Peterborough says people are extremely anxious over welfare cuts.

The spring statement yesterday heard Rachel Reeves announce the latest changes to welfare spending.

That's what the welfare system is supposed to be there for

This includes the universal credit health element being cut by 50% and frozen for new claimants.

It follows the announcement earlier this month that saw the narrowing of eligibility parameters for PIP payments.

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) found that steps to cut welfare spending set out earlier in March would save £4.8 billion after "final adjustments" made by the Government.

This is slightly short of the £5 billion originally envisaged by ministers.

It's going to fall back on families again to support people

Sandie Burns, CEO of Disability Peterborough, said:

"We can really understand why people are worried about this because it's really hard to predict."

"The stress and the anxiety that's around now, just thinking about the cuts, our welfare rights workers have said they've never seen anything like it before."

"It's really affecting people's day-to-day living just worrying about what's going to happen."

"What we have seen this year and last year is quite a few disabled people coming forward to say that they need food parcels and that they're not managing day to day now."

"So if things are going to get worse, it's hard to predict how many people will have to use food banks and charities, and that's what the welfare system is supposed to be there for."

"It's going to fall back on families again to support people."
