Events are going on across Peterborough, Stamford and Rutland to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day
Today in Peterborough, Stamford and Rutland, events are being held today to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
In Oakham a flag-raising ceremony at the castle is taking place to pay homage to people who served and sacrificed during the war.
The end of WW2 hostilities means a great deal here
It's an occasion close to Rutland's heart as the county is distinguished as a ‘military county’, with a significant proportion of its residents closely affiliated with the Armed Forces.
It is estimated that approximately 20% of Rutland’s population are either currently serving, reservists, veterans, MOD civilian workers, or family members of these groups.
Let us honour those who served and remember the sacrifices made for our freedom
Dr. Sarh Furness, Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, said:
'As a military county celebrating our freedom, the end of WW2 hostilities means a great deal here, and I want us all to celebrate this 80th anniversary.'
'I hope that everyone across Rutland can join together to mark this anniversary, which may be our last chance to include some of the wartime generation.'
'We have a series of events planned to do so. Let us honour those who served and remember the sacrifices made for our freedom, won at great cost.'
'This occasion is a moment to be shared and promises to be a day of reflection, joy, and unity, honouring the past while looking forward to a peaceful future.'
