Young people transform Evesham Youth Centre with colourful mural
Art project brings creativity and a sense of ownership to local youth
Young people in Evesham have come together to transform their local youth centre by creating a vibrant new mural.
The initiative was funded by the Worcestershire County Council Public Health Community Grant.
Participants at Ourside Youth Centre worked with local artists during creative workshops, exploring the significance of the centre to them.
The project also aimed to address anti-social behaviour issues among some of the young people involved.
Their collaboration has resulted in a large mural on the exterior of the building, offering them the chance to leave a positive mark on the centre they frequently use.
The young artists dedicated two days to designing and installing the artwork alongside professional artists.
In addition to the mural, they engaged in activities such as spray-painting old chairs, which are now used daily, adding colour and pride to the space.
The young participants expressed their appreciation for the project:
“We got a lot of freedom within the project and to use the spray paint how we wanted. It gave us all a chance to be creative as well as getting more involved with the centre and feeling more part of it.”
“I felt we could really be who we are through the project. We were asked what we thought and that’s massive.”
“People were walking past and stopping to talk and ask us what we were doing, saying ‘Well done’.”
Councillor Satinder Bell, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing at Worcestershire County Council, commended the project’s positive impact.
“Creative projects like this can be a turning point for our young people."
"They help build confidence, create a sense of belonging and support more positive choices."
"They offer a safe outlet for emotions, a chance to try new things, and a space where young people feel valued and connected."
"The mural has made the centre brighter and more welcoming, and everyone involved should feel incredibly proud.”
