Wychavon pledges action to save Droitwich Spa's Raven Hotel
It's nearly a year since the iconic building was severely damaged

Wychavon District Council has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the Raven Hotel in Droitwich Spa following severe fire damage nearly a year ago.
The historic Grade II listed building suffered extensive damage from a fire on 10th August last year, prompting Wychavon to take extensive measures to ensure its restoration. Recently released drone images reveal the extent of the damage.
Efforts by Wychavon to urge the property owner, Live Urban Two, to take responsibility for restoration have culminated in a court order. This legally binding directive mandates a structured schedule for making the building safe, with Wychavon empowered to intervene should the owner fail to meet deadlines.
Court Order Details
The court order stipulates essential works, including securing the site, consulting Historic England and the council prior to demolishing unsafe sections, and preserving the building's historic parts. A pivotal aspect of this order allows Wychavon to undertake necessary actions itself if the owner fails to comply.
The owner has met the initial deadline by seeking pre-application advice by 10th July, with preparations underway for a new structural survey and a Listed Building Consent application anticipated by the autumn. Upon demolition completion, the road surrounding the site is expected to reopen.
Restoration Efforts
A project manager has been appointed by the owner to work closely with Wychavon’s conservation and heritage team, ensuring the progression of each court-stipulated stage is meticulously monitored. Early evaluations by Historic England suggested some historic parts might be salvageable.
Cllr Richard Morris, Leader of Wychavon, said: "The fire was devastating and I know rocked the town. This building has been an ever-present image of Droitwich Spa and truly part of our heritage. I, along with other Droitwich Spa councillors have been pushing for action and appreciate the hard work of our officers who have been working in challenging circumstances.
“We’ve released these drone images as a reminder of the scale of the challenge, but also why we’re determined and pushing for action to secure the Raven’s future.
"We promised residents we would use every legal power available to us to protect this historic building and that's exactly what we've done. Securing the court order was a lengthy and detailed process involving partners, suppliers, planning and legal teams. But it is a major step forward that finally gives us the assurances action will be taken. We'll continue holding the owner to account at every stage of the timetable. If the commitments made to the court are not met, we will not hesitate to take whatever action is necessary to protect this important part of Droitwich Spa's heritage.”
