Public health experts in Worcestershire are reminding people to make sure they are protected from measles after the recent increase in cases in the area.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) published its latest measles data last week on the 11 June, which revealed the total number of cases confirmed in England between 1 January and 8 June 2026 had risen to 736.

It showed the West Midlands region had recorded 136 of them, adding that since the start of May there has been a steep rise in cases in Worcestershire which has seen mainly adults affected.

From 11 May to 8 June, 16 had been reported in the county, following the latest data release, Matthew Fung, who's a consultant in public health at Worcestershire County Council, said it was vital for people to check they have been vaccinated.

"Quite often, measles has been seen in school-aged children, but more recently in Worcestershire we've seen a rise in the number of adults catching measles as well, some of whom have become quite unwell and have required hospital treatment," he said.

"That's why we want to remind people really that measles doesn't just affect children, anyone unvaccinated is at risk.

"We're urging anyone who hasn't had two doses of the MMR vaccination to get vaccinated as soon as possible."
