Green Party councillors are “in shock” at the suspension of council deputy leader Adam Kent.

Cllr Kent, the Conservative group leader at Worcestershire County Council, yesterday (Thursday, May 14) formed a coalition with Green, Lib Dem and independent councillors to kick Reform out of power.

But just hours later he was placed under investigation by the Tory party chairman, who has said the alliance “will not go ahead”.

Green councillors say they were shocked to learn of Cllr Kent’s suspension – and that the move threatens the stability of the new administration.

Councillor Malcolm Victory described it as “serious interference with the workings of local government”.

Cllr Victory, who has been selected as chair of the children and families overview and scrutiny panel, said: ““At present we are still in shock at the Conservative group leader Adam Kent’s suspension by the Tory party Chairman, and uncertain where that leaves the new administration.

“But we will carry on as we were elected to do – without Central Party interference.

“Their chairman says that he should not have entered into an agreement with the Greens.

“However, the Green and Independent group will strive to make the changes that are required to save the council from special measures and to bring hope to Worcestershire residents in these difficult times.”

Matt Jenkins has said: “Tory HQ should keep out of it – this is a local matter, we’re just trying to do the best for local residents.”

We have asked the Conservative Party for comment.

Independent councillor, and former Reform deputy leader, David Taylor said: “Worcestershire needs cooperation, not conflict.

“It needs local decision‑making, cross‑party working and a focus on practical outcomes, not party discipline from afar.

“Residents deserve solutions, not political point‑scoring.

“I hope any issues are ironed out and the councillors in the cabinet can get on with the job in hand.”
