People across Herefordshire and Worcestershire are being urged to take extra care around open water following the warm weather.

It comes after England saw its sunniest March on record and its sixth driest March since records began in 1836 according to the Met Office.

Matt Croxall is the interim charity director for the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS), he says it's important people take extra care around rivers and lakes as well as beaches.

He said: "As temperatures go up and weather gets better, we know that unfortunately each year we experience more people that get themselves into trouble in the water and unfortunately tragedies happen and people lose their lives.

"We hugely encourage people to go out and enjoy water safely, whether that's on holiday at the coast or in your locality, what we'll always try and advise people to do is to do that in a safe way though.

"It's very different going out to swim in open water than in an indoor pool, whether that be a lake, river or a quarry nearby, so it's really important that people know what to do to keep themselves safe and their friends and family safe as well."

Further advice on how people can stay safe when taking part in open water safety swimming can be found on the RLSS website.
