Worcester Warriors Foundation aiming to set 'unofficial' world record for longest game of walking rugby
The foundation is hosting the game tomorrow (27 August), targeting a match length of five hours
A slightly different match lies ahead of a number of walking rugby clubs in Worcestershire tomorrow (27 August).
The Worcester Warriors Foundation is going to be attempting to set the 'unofficial' world record for the longest game of walking rugby.
They've set the target for it to last five hours, and are doing it as part of their efforts this month to raise funds to support the running of its community projects, which consist of things such as its dementia cafes and SEN adapted school sports.
Fundraising manager for the foundation, Daniel Hart, who completed a walk with others along the entire 31-mile Worcestershire Way route from Bewdley to Malvern last week as part of 'The Big One' fundraiser, said it should be a great occasion.
"We've looked online and we can't find anyone that's done a five-hour walking rugby match or longer, hence the name of the unofficial world record attempt," he said.
"At the moment, we're going to have it as seven-a-side, obviously we're going to have a continuous game so there won't be any pauses but we will have rolling subs, so it will give players a chance to come on, play for half an hour, an hour, or however much they want to play, have a break, and then they can come back on."
On how the funds raised will help them out, he added: "We run a wide range of projects from dementia cafes to walking rugby, we do a lot of SEN adapted sports across 16 SEN schools in Worcester, we run all kinds of projects across all age groups.
"We've got our own sensory room as well, so it's just about trying to do several different fundraising events over the month to raise funds to support all of those projects."
Play is scheduled to get underway at 3:30pm at Worcester RFC.
