Wild bird illnesses in Evesham prompt warnings to the public
Public urged to avoid touching sick or dead birds in Evesham

A rise in sick and dead wild birds along the River Avon in Evesham has prompted Wychavon District Council to issue safety warnings to the public.
Reports have come from Abbey Park, Crown Meadow, Workman Gardens and Corporation Meadow of swans and geese either unwell or found dead. While the exact cause remains unconfirmed, Avian Influenza, also known as bird flu, is being considered as a possible factor.
The council is advising people to avoid touching or moving sick or deceased birds.
Symptoms of avian flu in wild birds can include swollen heads, closed or watery eyes, unusual movements, lethargy, difficulty breathing and sudden death.
Defra and the UK Health Security Agency have stated that the risk to the general public from bird flu remains very low, although vigilance is advised.
Those who come across dead wild birds can also report their sightings to Defra through their online system or by calling 03459 33 55 77 (option 7). These reports help national agencies monitor and manage the spread of the illness.
Ian Edwards, Director of Economy & Environment, said: “We know how much people care about the swans and geese along the Avon, and it’s upsetting to see some of them unwell. We’re asking everyone to help by not touching or moving any sick or dead birds and to report them to our Parks Team or directly to Defra so they can be dealt with safely.
"We also suggest keeping pets on a lead when walking by the river, Abbey Park, Crown Meadow, Workman Gardens and Corporation Meadow as the water levels drop, just in case there are any unwell birds or ones that have died.
"If you do see a bird that looks unwell, please give it plenty of space and leave it in peace. And we ask people not to hand-feed wild geese and swans.”
Anyone who spots a sick or dead bird is encouraged to report it to the Parks Team during office hours by calling 01386 565570 or emailing [email protected] . Providing an exact location using the What3Words app or website can assist the team in addressing the situation quickly.
