West Mercia Police say reminding people to take extra care when out on the roads driving.

Last year the force say 56 people were killed and 516 were seriously injured in road traffic collisions across Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire.

The force are supporting Operation Spotlight which is a national operation to highlight and raise awareness of the work roads policing officers, local policing teams and communities do every day to tackle and try and reduce the number that are killed or seriously injured on our roads.

Inspector Darren Godsall is responsible for road policing in the force, he says one life lost on the roads is one too many.

He said: "Over this time we will be specifically be targeting and looking at the fatal four, which we identify as the primary reasons for serious and fatal road traffic collisions on our roads.

"We use the words fatal four which consists of speeding or use of inappropriate speed when the conditions or the weather doesn't warrant it, distractions such as mobile phones driving under the influence of drink or drugs otherwise being impaired and not wearing a seat belt.

"Each one of these is known to contribute to road traffic collisions and it's simply a matter of looking after road users and protecting those who are most vulnerable."
