The University of Worcester's deputy vice chancellor has said it is "important" for them to help students to feel safe in and around the city while their studying, following their returns or arrivals for the new academic year.

Students have been making their way back to campus or even for the first time in recent weeks to either continue their studies or officially start them.

As part of that, the university say it has been highlighting key safety messages to them about how to stay safe on the likes of nights out, but also how to access support if they need it throughout the day or night.

Deputy vice chancellor professor Sally Moyle said there's been a real focus on making sure students were aware of their key messages, while the university also enhanced some of its ways to help look after them.

"This year we've done a few new things, so for example, we have introduced our new welfare team, so their new roles are there to help and support and guide students about general wellbeing," she said.

"They were out all through the night when students were enjoying that welcome week, they were down on Sabrina Bridge making sure students knew where they were going, how they were going to get home, offering any advice, tips and support that any of our students needed.

"We've also been running some mini buses up and down from the city centre up to campus all through the night to help get students home should they want to."

She added: "For many of our students, it's their first time away from home staying in a new city, making new friends, So they're starting to formulate those relationships with new friends and housemates, so it's important that they feel safe."

Moyle also said the university had been handing out 'nightcaps' to students which are drinks covers which can protect their drinks on nights out.
