Severn Valley Autumn Steam Gala unveils historic locomotive line-up
BR Standard Class 4 Tank joins remarkable collection for event
The Severn Valley Railway has completed the line-up for its eagerly anticipated Autumn Steam Gala by announcing BR Standard Class 4 Tank No 80097 as the fourth and final guest locomotive.
The event will run for four days from 17th to 20th September, showcasing the charm of pre-preservation days with an impressive collection of locomotives.
No 80097, painted in British Railways black livery, embodies a compelling story in the world of locomotive preservation.
Withdrawn from service in 1965 after just 11 years, the tank engine underwent a remarkable 34-year restoration journey, involving over 200 volunteers before returning to steam on the East Lancashire Railway in 2019.
This addition is set to delight steam enthusiasts as it evokes memories of British railways during the 1950s and 1960s.
Line-Up and Event Details
The tank engine joins a distinguished line-up including GWR Small Prairie No 5526, GWR Pannier Tank No 9681, and Ivatt Class 2MT No 41313.
Each locomotive plays a key role in the gala's theme, celebrating the essence of Severn Valley Railway before the era of preservation.
Gus Dunster, Severn Valley Railway's chief executive officer, expressed enthusiasm for the event, highlighting No 80097 as a symbol of volunteer dedication.
"Every preserved locomotive has an incredible story behind it, and 80097 is a remarkable symbol of endurance, determination and volunteer dedication," Dunster said.
The Railway aims to recreate the nostalgic atmosphere of its early years, combining guest locomotives with the home fleet, which includes the anticipated debut of the newly restored GWR Large Prairie No 4150.
