Schools across Worcestershire and its surrounding areas are taking precautionary measures due to the extreme heatwave which continues today (26/6).

Faced with red weather warnings and rising temperatures, educational institutions are prioritising the safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff by adapting their schedules and, in some cases, closing altogether.

A number of schools have opted for full day closures due to the severity of the weather conditions.

Aurora Wilden View and Tenbury High Ormiston Academy are among those suspending classes for the entire day, citing health risks associated with the forecasted high temperatures.

In Droitwich, Chawson Community First School and Witton Middle School will also remain shut, with authorities stressing the importance of protecting students from the adverse effects of the heat.

Meanwhile, dozens of schools have announced partial closures, shortening the school day to minimise exposure during peak heat periods. Abbey Park Primary School in Pershore will end its school day at 1:15pm, while Bengeworth Academy and Blackminster Middle School in Evesham plan to close at 12:30pm.

In Bromsgrove, Aston Fields Middle School is set to operate only from 8:50am to 12:30pm, and St John's CE Middle School will close at 12:30pm in response to the heatwave. Here, strict risk assessments have indicated the dangers posed by high classroom temperatures, which compromise learning conditions.

Other schools like Bewdley Primary School have planned condensed school days to modern weather conditions, finishing at 1pm for several days, including the 26th June. Dyson Perrins CE Academy in Malvern has announced a closure at 12:10pm, while Droitwich Spa High School will shut from 12:20pm due to the oppressive heat conditions indoors.

School officials across the region have indicated that the decision to close early follows guidance from weather and health agencies, which have issued red warnings for extreme heat. This initiative aims to mitigate health risks associated with classroom environments that become increasingly inhospitable as temperatures soar.

In locations such as Redditch, Crabbs Cross Academy and Walkwood CE Middle School have shortened their days, with closures scheduled at 1:30pm and 1:35pm respectively. In Worcester, Stanley Road Primary School will close at 1pm, affecting all year groups, as part of a strategic response to the challenging weather.

Parents are advised to collect their children at designated closure times, and some schools are offering hybrid learning opportunities as an alternative. These significant adaptations are part of a regional effort to ensure the safety and comfort of pupils and staff during unusual and extreme weather patterns.
