Residents of a Herefordshire village are aiming to try and save what they say is a vital school crossing patrol.

The crossing, which is privately funded through donations, has been in place near Eardisley Primary School since last September.

Kelly Munford's son goes to the school and is one of those calling for support to help keep the crossing going for the future.

She says it has made a real difference in making sure children can get to school safely and is so important to the area.

"It's vital not only just because it slows traffic down, I am convinced it saves lives," she said.

"I've seen several parents literally had to drag their children back by their arm because cars have not stopped and they've driven past and they're oblivious that the crossing is there.

"We have a pelican crossing there but it isn't that visible, so what it has also done is made that more clearer and I think it would be massively missed if we couldn't keep it in place."

The council says it welcomes any privately-funded patrols carried out appropriately as an additional safety measure.

A Herefordshire Council spokesperson said: “We operate a number of school crossing patrols around the county, and we have to focus funding on locations that statistics show are the most in need of patrols.

"Although we don't have plans to fund any additional patrols, the council have secured the funding for the existing ones to continue.

"Provided they have the appropriate insurance and personal protective equipment, we welcome volunteers and privately-funded patrols as an additional safety measure on local roads.

"We also offer guidance and support, available on request from our Road Safety Officer to help local communities deliver their patrols.”
