Work to restore a Worcester park's historic bandstand will hopefully "bring it back to life", a city councillor has said.

The Grade II listed structure in Gheluvelt Park had plans for repairs to be carried out on it backed by Worcester City Council's planning committee at a meeting last Thursday (11 December).

A main focus of the scheme will be on replacing its timber bridge while aiming to stay as close as possible to the bandstand's original design.

Green Party councillor Hannah Cooper, who's Arboretum ward covers some of the park, said it's something her and fellow Green councillor for the ward Karen Lewing have been calling for to happen for a bit.

"I'm really relieved it got through," she said.

"I would have been very surprised if it hadn't have got through, the building is in definite need of repair and it's looking a bit sad, so I'm really hoping that this work will bring it back to life and to its former glory.

"We don't want this to get further into disrepair because it will become more expensive, so it's really good to do it now and I can't think of anyone who wouldn't want the bandstand restored, so it makes sense for everyone and it's such a part of Worcester's heritage."

Part of the work will also include reinstating the bandstand’s original gate and a long-lost bronze plaque to it.
