Poems helping create different waiting experience for passengers at Worcestershire railway station
Poetry has been placed around the station at Droitwich Spa through a project by the Poetry at the Lido group
Poetry has been put up around a Worcestershire railway station to help play a part in giving people something else to engage with rather just being on the likes of their phones while waiting for their train.
The 'Train of Thought' project was established earlier year in Droitwich Spa by the Poetry at the Lido group.
A number of poems have been placed on display which cover a variety of themes, with them being switched out for new ones on a regular basis.
Caroline Attwood-Reusser is one of those from the group who help run it, she said she got the idea after seeing something similar elsewhere when she lived back in London.
"I was around when poems on the underground was launched, and I personally found it really inspiring when you didn't have a phone to look at and you were just sitting there aimlessly and then you'd be inspired by seeing a really interesting poem just up where they'd normally be an advert," she said.
“I've always thought that was a grand idea, but I also don't think poems should be rarefied things that are just tucked away in books, they need to be for the people, by the people.
“So when we started thinking about the station, it was like, well that would be really good just to put some poems up.”
Worcestershire's Poet Laureate for 2026-27, Jay Rose Ana, is among those to get involved with the initiative and have work put on show.
The group said it has also inspired people who have seen the poems to submit their own ones which have gone on display.
"It's absolutely amazing, and that’s exactly the point, we are just a group of people who like poetry and we just write because it comes from us, so when you see that coming from other people, it's lovely, it just shows a little bit of a deeper thought and a little bit of a connection," Caroline said.
"The themes could be very simple about going to Birmingham or they could be a bit more profound about where we are, so it could invoke all sorts of things.
"The poems don't have to be about travelling, they could just be poems, so it really is just trying to reach out and get people thinking about poetry in a just a bit more of a personal way."
The station itself has also undergone a summer 'makeover', with the Friends of Droitwich Spa group adding in new floral displays to boost its appearance through funding from West Midlands Railway's (WMR) station adoption fund.
