Plans put forward to renovate currently closed tearoom at Worcestershire train station
Lady Foley’s Tearoom at the station in Great Malvern closed in October 2023, but Centenary Lounge are looking to bring it back into use
A historic space at a Worcestershire railway station which has been shut for nearly three years could be set to get refurbished.
Lady Foley’s Tearoom at Great Malvern had served people on platform 1 for over 35 years before it closed its doors back in October 2023.
Now, Centenary Lounge, who already run a number of railway station tearooms, is looking to renovate it.
Its ideas include replacing the existing counters and furniture, as well as ripping out the carpet to expose and restore the original limestone paving that’s underneath, and says it plans to refurbish and reuse the existing tables and chairs.
In plans submitted to Malvern Hills District Council, it stated: "The proposals have been designed to retain the principal architectural and historic features of the accommodation while allowing the room to function effectively as a contemporary café.
“The proposed works seek to continue this established use of this area as a café, and allow it to continue to make a positive contribution to the active use of the listed station.”
The tearoom is named after Lady Emily Foley, who lived at Stoke Edith in the 19th century and regularly travelled by train.
A private waiting room was provided for her at the station, which is Grade II listed, so she could wait for her train separately from the general public, which eventually became a café.
