Hundreds of hand-stitched pennants with messages on them such as "just walking home" have been put up around Worcester for a second year in a row to mark five years since the murder of Sarah Everard.

They've been tied to trees throughout the city centre and on the three Sabrina, Diglis and Kepax bridges to also highlight women's safety and for International Women's Day which is being held today (Sunday 8 March).

Worcester Craftivists are the ones behind the display which includes the names of other women who were abducted and murdered while they were walking home and in public spaces.

Co-founder of the group Barbara Lowe said: "Last year was the first year that we had marked the anniversary of the murder of Sarah Everard while she was just walking home.

"We put up 270 pennants around the city centre and on Sabrina Bridge but this year we decided because it is the fifth anniversary that we would try and make it 500 and we exceeded that target as I think there's about 520."

The group said it had spent the last few months working on them before getting to the stage to put them up.

It believed there was around 50 people involved with creating them for this occasion, stitching the words on to the material ahead of it.

"We decided that pennants would be something that would be thought-provoking," other co-founder Cathy Growney said.

"People would wonder what they're looking at and hopefully ask questions and talk to their fellow companions about, but also trigger a reminder.

"This year we did an additional thing on the three bridges which is a longer big pennant which actually explains what they are all about because I think last year a few people were baffled by it still {and what it meant}."
