An NHS worker from Worcestershire has been convicted of stealing £279,000 from the public sector through fraudulent activities, an inquiry has revealed.
Emmanuel Nbanga, 46, was found guilty at Worcester Crown Court of fraud and fraudulent trading.
His wife, Remilekun Olusesi, 40, was convicted of money laundering, while Solomon Adeyemi, 58, faced charges related to fraudulent trading and possession of false identity documents.
Details of the Fraud
An investigation by the NHS Counter Fraud Authority uncovered offences taking place between 23rd October 2017 and 11th September 2019, which caused significant financial loss to the National Health Service.
Nbanga worked in materials management at Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, overseeing stock levels and the procurement of medical supplies for the operating theatres.
He illicitly provided stock intended for medical operations to Adeyemi, director of Ultimate Medical Limited (UML), where it was repackaged.
Nbanga then repurchased the stock from UML, alongside other items supplied by UML that were not compliant with medical device regulations and were unfit for medical use.
Olusesi’s company served as a conduit for laundering money from these fraudulent transactions.
Statements and Future Measures
Gayle Ramsay, Specialist Prosecutor of the Crown Prosecution Service, highlighted the breach of trust involved:
"Nbanga held a position of responsibility and trust to help ensure that vital supplies for medical operations were there to support staff and patients. Nbanga abused this trust and stole hard-pressed taxpayer money for selfish and greedy purposes. He was supported in this public sector scam by Adeyemi and Olusessi."
The Crown Prosecution Service says it aims to continue its collaboration with law enforcement and investigative bodies to pursue justice against individuals involved in public sector fraud.
