A service specifically designed to help young people quit smoking has been introduced in Worcestershire.

Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust has made it available in the county so those aged 12-17 can access dedicated and personalised free support in a setting where the person feels most comfortable.

It was launched on the 14 September as part of an expansion to the Smoke Free Homes service, aiming to help young people understand their smoking habits, set goals, and work towards becoming smoke free through a "supportive and non-judgemental approach".

Smoking prevention public health nurse specialist and team lead for Smoke Free Homes, Michelle Caladine, said creating something like this which could help was a real priority for them.

"We know there is a need for this service, we know that it needs to be bespoke for young people," she said.

"Although we can use aspects of the adult service that we run, it needs to be geared to that young person.

"They need to feel in control, they need to feel it's their choice, and they need to feel that they're gaining independence from smoking, so that's very important."

Councillor Alan Bailes, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Worcestershire County Council, added: "Too many people start smoking at a young age, and we know the earlier someone begins, the greater the risk to their health in later life.

"That's why it is vital that young people who want to quit can access the right support at the right time.

"This new service is an important step forward for Worcestershire, giving young people access to specialist advice and practical support in a way that works for them."
