Kidderminster's Museum of Carpet closes permanently after 13 years
Financial challenges force heritage site to shut its doors
The Museum of Carpet in Kidderminster has permanently closed over the weekend, after 13 years of celebrating the town's rich weaving heritage.
The Carpet Museum Trust announced that despite efforts from staff, volunteers, Trustees, Corporate Partners, and supporters to overcome financial difficulties, the museum is no longer able to sustain its operations.
Rising energy costs, maintenance expenses, loss of tenants, and lower visitor numbers have contributed to the decision.
Attempts to secure long-term funding with support from Museums Development Midlands and the Arts Council failed to provide a viable solution for keeping the museum open.
Though the Stour Vale Mill site will close, the Carpet Museum Trust will continue managing its archives, collections, and displays.
Plans are underway to preserve and relocate items, ensuring future generations can access and appreciate Kidderminster’s carpet-making history.
Before the closure, Geoffrey Gilbert, Chair of the Carpet Museum Trust, said: "Up to December 20th, we hope that the people of Kidderminster and Wyre Forest will take the opportunity to show their support and appreciation of what we have accomplished by visiting us along with their families."
