A murder investigation has been launched following the discovery of a body in a garage in Worcester.

Emergency services attended an address on Surman Street around 6am this morning (26 February) following the report of a garage on fire.

The body of a man was found inside, and his identification is yet to be established.

A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Lougher said: “We are continuing to establish the identity of the man sadly found deceased.

“Our initial enquiries have confirmed he is a white male.

“We are aware of reports that this may be race or religiously motivated and the concern this may cause.

“There is no information to suggest that this is the case at this time, but the investigation team will retain an open mind as the investigation progresses.”

Officers remain in the area as enquiries continue and to also offer reassurance to members of the public.

Police are also investigating a nearby fire at a community centre on Stanley Road, which also started this morning (26 February).

They believe it is connected to the discovery of the body on Surnam Street.
