M5 reopens - 30 hours after lorry fire near Droitwich
Emergency resurfacing work was needed
The M5 motorway has reopened following extended closures due to emergency resurfacing required after a lorry fire.
The fire occurred on the northbound stretch between Junction 5 at Droitwich and Junction 4A for the M42 around 10pm on Tuesday 26th May.
Although initially closed for fire response efforts, resurfacing work began to address damage sustained during the fire.
Delays and diversions
National Highways tweeted updates showing varied delays and congestion levels during the resurfacing operations, with lanes 1 and 2 remaining closed for extended periods due to adverse weather conditions hampering the work.
At one stage, drivers faced 30-minute delays with four miles of congestion.
During these periods, fully signed diversions were implemented to manage traffic flow and minimise disruption.
Completion and reopening
Despite heavy rain causing unexpected delays to the resurfacing work overnight, the motorway has now reopened fully.
Even post-reopening, some 10-minute delays with one mile of congestion were reported - but we're told traffic is now flowing.
