A Herefordshire school has highlighted the importance of breakfast to pupils ahead of it's breakfast club launch.

This morning (Monday 28 April) Little Dewchurch Primary School has started the trial of the government's programme.

75\0 state schools with primary-aged children from every region of England were selected to join the pilot which will offer a free breakfast to all pupils and at least 30 minutes of childcare before school.

Head of school Nicola Hudson says breakfast is vital for pupils when it comes to their education.

She said: "Breakfast is really important, children need to have that focus and concentration in lessons and those who aren't well fed and and nourished or had their breakfast, concentration can dip and attention spans can dip.

"With being a very rural school, parents need to get to work, so it's really important that we can offer that safe space so they can leave their children and do that, but it also means it is a comfortable start to the school day for pupils still.

"We've put a lot of work in to making sure that we're ready for the launch as we didn't have any sort of before school provision in place at all prior to this, so we've really had to sort of transform the space in our school.

The trial is expected to run from April before a national rollout later on.
