Foster carer in Worcester praised for transforming young lives
Craig Palmer's dedication highlights the impact of fostering
A foster carer from Worcester has spent 17 years supporting young people and highlighting the vital role foster carers play in changing lives.
Craig Palmer has dedicated nearly two decades to fostering children and young people with various needs. One young person he fostered, Faith, experienced 10 different homes before finding stability with Craig.
Upon arrival, Faith struggled with dysregulation and distrust towards adults. However, Craig remained steadfast, employing consistency, patience, and understanding to make Faith feel secure.
Craig shared: "It was extremely difficult, of course. A lot of it was to do with fear and they test you. You just can't take it personally. Behind the dysregulation is fear."
Over time, Faith's situation improved significantly. After spending two years with Craig, she was able to return to her mother, and their relationship remains strong, with Faith staying in touch with Craig, who continues to be a significant influence in her life.
Faith expressed her gratitude to Craig, saying: "To my life saver! You are amazing. You are the one who rescued me, my teeth and my life! You have been a huge stepping stone in my life (not a little one, an amazing step). You will NEVER be forgotten by us. Thank you so so so so SO much. Love you Craigy."
Craig's experience underscores the importance of perseverance and the lasting impact foster carers can have on young lives. He stated: "There’s no such thing as a bad kid, just kids who are communicating their trauma through their behaviour. You've got to commit to them, but it's so enjoyable. The kids are fantastic. If you persevere, you can make a real difference."
Currently, Craig continues to work with Worcestershire Fostering, preparing to welcome a brother and sister who had previously been separated, allowing them to stay together and maintain their family bond while receiving the care they need.
Councillor Natalie McVey, Cabinet Member for Children and Families at Worcestershire County Council, remarked: "Faith's story is a powerful reminder of the difference foster carers can make in a child's life. Through patience, commitment and compassion, Craig helped provide the stability and support Faith needed to thrive. I would like to thank both Craig and Faith for sharing their story. Their experience highlights the positive impact of fostering and the importance of giving children and young people the opportunity to build trusting relationships and achieve their potential."
Worcestershire Fostering encourages more people to consider fostering to provide the stability, care, and support that can transform a child's life.
