Herefordshire households are likely to get new weekly kerbside food and garden waste collections within a year.

The Council’s cabinet of leaders are expected to approve next week (May 1st) proposals for a new household food waste collection regime, which all councils are required to have in place by next March, along with an optional, paid-for domestic garden waste collection service.

The moves will help the council meet its own recycling targets, which it hopes will go from the current 40% of waste to 58%.

Existing household waste and non-food recycling collections will be unaffected.

Councils like Herefordshire have to bring in food waste collections, under Government plans, by March 2026

The Council says it is seeking funding from central government, yet to be confirmed, “to prepare for a smooth introduction of the service”.

Once this has been secured, it plans to issue all households in the county with a small food waste caddy to use in the kitchen and a larger outdoor caddy which will be collected each week.

Meanwhile a fortnightly, year-round garden waste collection service is also planned from next year, which households would have to opt into at a proposed cost of £60 a year.

Employing new brown bins, this “will replace the existing green garden sack service by the end of March 2026”, the council said.
