The youngest ever chairman in Wychavon District Council's history has said he wants to use his time spent in the role to highlight some of the things which are having an impact on our younger people.

Councillor Gregory Wilkins was elected at the authority's annual council meeting earlier this week on Wednesday (13 May).

He's three years younger than councillor George Duffy who held the position in 2024/25, and at the time was the youngest person to carry out the role in 51 years.

“It’s an honour to be Wychavon’s youngest ever Chairman," councillor Wilkins said.

"The fact my fellow councillors are willing to trust a young person with an important position like this, when young people are not always listened to or given a chance, is a testament to the kind of council Wychavon is.

“With local government reorganisation on the horizon, I’d like to use this platform as an opportunity to encourage more young people to engage with our work and get involved in local politics.

“Most of all, I want to get out and see as much of our amazing district as possible."

Earlier this week 28-year-old councillor George Connolly became the youngest chairman at Wyre Forest District Council, while Worcester City Council is also believed to have appointed its youngest mayor on Tuesday in 26-year-old Tor Pingree.
