Children across the Malvern Hills District are being invited to take part in a competition aimed at reducing food waste.

The initiative, launched by Malvern Hills District Council (MHDC), invites young people to complete a Food Champ Checklist featuring fun and educational activities.

These include checking expiry dates on products, preparing a meal, and creating fruit and vegetable art.

Every child who completes the checklist will receive a certificate and the title of Food Champ.

Additionally, participants will be entered into a prize draw to win an educational sticker book and a ‘grow your own’ seed kit.

According to the ‘Let’s Waste Less’ campaign, households in the UK waste the equivalent of 15 billion edible meals annually, and Worcestershire families alone throw away an average of £720 worth of edible food each year.

The council hopes the competition will raise awareness of how reducing food waste can save families money and also benefit the environment.

Cllr Jeremy Owenson, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Malvern Hills District Council, said:

“This competition is a great way to raise awareness of the impact of food waste and also encourage the reduction of food waste in the home, we are really looking forward to seeing completed checklists and fun drawings.”

The competition runs until 1st December 2025.
