People across Herefordshire and Worcestershire are being reminded to do what they can to avoid having a large amount of waste this festive period.

Data suggests the amount of waste at Christmas typically goes up by 30% compared to the rest of the year.

The University of Worcester's director of sustainability Katy Boom has said it's important people consider how they recycle over this time where possible.

"We obviously all get excited for Christmas and we love having presents and we love to unwrap them, but it does increase the amount of waste that happens," she said.

"The bows and the ribbons and some of your Christmas cards you could kind of cut those up and make nice little tags that can go on other gifts because we'll still have lots of visitors and things coming up at different times (in the future).

"We get to use quite a lot of foil and quite a lot of cling film over Christmas so actually food can be stored in your fridge with Tupperware or glass ones or a beeswax reusable wrap to wrap your food in so it will actually last longer in your fridge, so really be mindful of that."
