An annual duck race is set to take place on the River Wye in Hereford later today (24 August).

Organised by Hereford City Rotary Club, the Big Hereford Duck Race aims to raises funds for charities in the area, with some funds also making it internationally.

Every single duck that takes to the water is also sponsored by either an individual or a business.

Rotary club president Colin Hunt says thousands of ducks were involved last year and it's great to see how much it's grown since they started it 19 years ago.

"When we started we used to do probably around 2,000 ducks, but last year we launched over 6,000, which is a lot of plastic ducks going in the river," he said.

"We got every one back though because what we do is we put a boom across the river to stop them once they get to the the end point.

"Over the 19 years I estimate we've probably raised in excess of £150,000 and every year we're surprised at how many people turn up to watch the ducks going down the river because sometimes it can take an awful long time, then it can also be over in five or ten minutes."

The race gets underway from 3pm at Hunderton Bridge.
