Outrage after early release of man who assaulted a Hereford police officer
PCC John Campion criticises justice system after attacker is released
Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion has voiced strong disapproval over the decision to release Alex Quinn, the man who violently assaulted PC Ryan Davies whilst he was on duty in Hereford.
PC Davies endured severe injuries and long-term mental health challenges following the attack, which occurred on Good Friday 2024 during a plainclothes operation aimed at protecting women and girls.
Quinn, along with his father Richard, was convicted in 2024 for their roles in the attack on both PC Davies and a member of the public. The Quinns were sentenced earlier this year, with Richard Quinn receiving four years and three months, and Alex Quinn three years and ten months at a young offenders' institute.
However, recent news has emerged of Alex Quinn's early release, sparking criticism from the PCC.
Campion described the decision as a failure of justice and expressed concerns over what he perceives as weaknesses in the criminal justice system due to governmental inaction.
Campion pledged to continue advocating for greater protections for emergency workers, urging the government to address systemic shortcomings.
The attack profoundly affected PC Davies, leaving him with multiple physical injuries and PTSD. Although he has returned to policing in a desk-based role, he expressed eagerness to reclaim his community-focused position on the front line, despite ongoing health struggles.
Ryan Davies acknowledged the invaluable support from West Mercia Police, the Police Federation, and various charities, which contributed significantly to his recovery process.
Lesley Williams, then secretary of West Mercia Police Federation, expressed concern over the leniency of sentences for those who attack police officers. She highlighted the importance of imposing harsh penalties to deter such violent acts and protect serving officers.
Chief Superintendent Edd Williams and Chief Constable Richard Cooper also condemned the attack, emphasising their commitment to holding offenders accountable and supporting assaulted officers.
Campaigners are now calling for the Ministry of Justice to review the circumstances surrounding Alex Quinn's release.
