Thousands of poppies have been displayed from St Peter's Church in Powick alongside many others across both counties as tributes for this year's Remembrance period.

Remembrance Sunday events are taking place throughout today (9 November), with parades happening in the likes of Worcester and Hereford ahead of further services on Tuesday's Armistice Day (11 November).

St Peter's Church in Powick have created a poppy cascade for the first time in their history to mark this year's Remembrance, their display being just over 21 metres in length with around 5,000 poppies on it.

Vicar of the church Reverend Gary Crellin said it's been a real team effort doing it and it's something to be really proud of.

He said: "It's been something that has been a dream of mine for years since seeing the poppies at the Tower of London to do something in one of the churches I serve.

"It's taken a while, but we've done it at long last.

"I think this year of the 80th commemoration year of the Second World War, I think we've actually got something which is beautiful and very moving to share with our community."

Another display at St John-in-Bedwardine Church in Worcester features over 8,000 poppies and was created by the Knit and Natter group, with contributions coming from Cyprus, Northern Ireland, Plymouth, Portsmouth, and Bristol.

Christine Harfoot was the co-ordinator of the one in St Peter's and said they also saw poppies coming in from all over the country.

"They've come from a whole army of people who've been knitting, crocheting, weaving, felt making poppies from as far afield as Bedford to the east, and mid-Wales to the west, and lots and lots of local people have been involved as well," she said.

"It's been wonderful, and the people who actually knitted the poppies came on that day when it was put up and we had not seen it out at its full length up until the point so it was really awesome for us to see it."

Other poppy cascades include one at St Michael’s Church in Broadway while a Field of Remembrance has also been created at Hereford Cathedral.
