A yellow heat health alert is in force across the South West of England.

It has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) who high temperatures over the coming days may put vulnerable people at increased risk.

They are also urging health and social care services to prepare as higher temperatures may put more pressure on services.

The heat health alert started at 2pm today (22nd May) and is in place until 5pm on Wednesday 27 May 2026.

Dr Beth Smout, Interim Regional Deputy Director of Health Protection for the South West, said:

"We know that even moderate heat can lead to serious health problems, especially for older people and those with certain health conditions, so it's important that everyone across the South West takes simple precautions while enjoying the warm weather over the coming days.

"If you have friends, family or neighbours who are more vulnerable, it is important to check in on them and ensure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice."

The UKHSA also say the South West's coastlines, rovers and open water present further risks during hot weather, and they are reminding people that cold-water shock can affect even strong swimmers with water-related incidents typically increasing during periods of high temperature.

People are being advised to only swim at designated, supervised locations and to keep a close eye on children near any open water.
