Theft of dozens of wheelie bins from cemetery condemned
Dozens of wheelie bins have been stolen from a cemetery in Gloucester.
Gloucester City Council is asking for help in catching the thieves who have made away with around 25 black wheelie bins from the cemetery and crematorium in Coney Hill.
The offenders, who have been filmed on CCTV, emptied the bins out before stealing them.
The city council’s deputy leader Declan Wilson (LD, Hucclecote) said: “This behaviour is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
“Those responsible should be ashamed, and we will take every possible step to identify them and hold them accountable.
“This isn’t just theft – it’s a complete lack of respect for a place that should be treated with dignity.”
Councillor Tracy Millard (L), who represents Coney Hill at the city council, said she was shocked by the theft and the “disrespect shown to our community and those whose remains are laid to rest there”.
“This behaviour is completely unacceptable, and I hope those responsible will be found and dealt with appropriately,” she said.
“Sadly, I am concerned that we will see more incidents of this nature now that the Liberal Democrat administration at Gloucester City Council has decided to charge for replacement wheelie bins. I would urge them to reconsider this policy as soon as possible.”
Council leader Jeremy Hilton (LD, Kingsholm and Wotton) also condemned the theft.
“It’s an immoral action and should be condemned,” he said. “We hope if anyone knows who it is they will report the matter to the police and the council.
“There’s no rational reason to do it. Who wants 25 bins in their back garden?”

“Help us protect our community spaces – please share this post and report anything you know asap,” a council spokesperson said.
