A green party councillor for stroud completed a marathon of litter picking over the weekend.

Councillor Gill Thomas took a 26.2 mile walk along the Cotswold Way on Saturday night to clear up the area whilst also fundraising.

Almost 2,000 pieces of litter were collected, including 800 pieces of soft plastics and 129 bags of dog poo.

The aim of the 14 walk was to raise awareness for littering and raise money for ‘Litter Pickers for Little Pickers’, an initiative which aims to educate children on litter and caring for the environment.

The campaign was started by Gill who is also Stroud District Council’s Member Champion for Litter and Clean Environment.

There are just over 60 primary schools in the Stroud District and so far 45 have signed up to the campaign, requesting over 1400 litter pickers between them.

Gill Thomas told Greatest Hits Radio; “education is key and you know, the next generation, they’re the ones who are going to inherit this planet.

“They need to understand how to look after it and how to care for it and why it’s important.”

She added: “The Cotswold Way is a lovely walk that is an asset to Stroud, and only portions of it were blighted by litter.”
