Stroud District Council is urging the community to collaborate and secure the future of the historic Stratford Park Lido, needing £5 million in essential repairs before reopening.

The beloved 89-year-old facility requires significant work according to multiple independent surveys.

Given the scale of work needed, the repairs cannot be completed in phases, meaning the lido will not open for this summer season.

Councillor Martin Brown, Chair of Stroud District Council Community Services and Licensing Committee, expressed commitment to safeguarding the lido's future.

"Stratford Park Lido is an iconic and much-loved place in our district’s history, and we are determined to give it every chance of a sustainable future," Councillor Brown said.

He acknowledged the council's willingness to secure the funds needed if it were financially feasible, but highlighted financial constraints.

"But the reality is that not enough people use the Lido each summer to repay a loan of that size, and the Council would have to stop funding other essential services to cover the costs."

This call to action encourages community members, charities, and partners to aid fundraising efforts to ensure the lido's longevity.

Councillor Brown emphasized the importance of community cooperation: "We remain hopeful that together we can find a solution that protects this wonderful site for future generations."

The council has solicited the aid of Friends of Stratford Park Lido to guide the next steps and is inviting a broad coalition of supporters to participate.

Options for securing the lido's future will be considered in the coming weeks, with opportunities for fundraising and community involvement being explored.

"If no one steps forward," Councillor Brown warned, "the site will be protected from further deterioration until the new Unitary Authority decides on next steps."
