Stonehouse has won the RHS Britain in Bloom UK Finals Competition 2026.

Every tree within Stonehouse's boundaries counts towards the project, whether it's on public or private land, with locals acting as "tree custodians" to help reach thirty percent tree canopy coverage by 2040.

There are approximately 150 tree species growing in the town with climate resilient species including London plane, Tibetan cherry and swamp cypress.

Judges were won over by a boat trip along the canal, praising it as a haven for otters and water voles, and by planting schemes designed to cope with the town's wind and sun.

Cuttings from Stonehouse's iconic Globe Willow, planted in nineteen twenty one, are now growing in gardens across the town after storm damage forced major pruning back in 2024.

The town took gold in the Small Town category before being named Britain's overall champion at a ceremony in Rochdale.

Darren Share, Chair of the Britain in Bloom judges, said, “Huge congratulations to Stonehouse, worthy winners of the Britain in Bloom UK Finals 2026.

It’s fantastic to see how much the group is investing in its urban forest and the real community effort behind it. They are an inspiring reminder that Bloom groups can have a real and lasting impact, enhancing local environments and leaving a legacy that reaches far beyond their own communities.”
