New crisis fund offers targeted help for South Gloucestershire households
South Gloucestershire Council launches a new scheme to support low-income families
South Gloucestershire Council is introducing a new initiative to support low-income households facing financial difficulty, with the launch of the Crisis and Resilience Fund.
This new fund aligns with the Government's nationwide approach to assist individuals recovering from financial crises and fostering long-term financial resilience.
Designed to replace the previous Household Support Fund, the Crisis and Resilience Fund aims to provide more targeted assistance to those in greatest need.
Eligible residents experiencing an unexpected financial shock, such as job loss, bereavement, illness, or essential costs, can still apply for emergency payments under these new guidelines.
Due to changes in policy, however, repeat or duplicate requests may not be approved.
The fund also extends support to a broader array of advice and practical assistance, helping individuals maximise income, manage debts, improve budgeting, reduce energy costs, and access food and community support.
These services are accessible through One Stop Shops, community venues, food banks, and partner organisations throughout South Gloucestershire, with outreach efforts focused on rural areas.
Residents seeking aid from the Crisis and Resilience Fund will receive practical guidance to avert future crises.
Cllr Alison Evans, South Gloucestershire's cabinet member for cost of living support, said: "We know many residents are under real financial pressure, and no one should feel they are on their own when something unexpected happens."
"The new Crisis and Resilience Fund allows us to offer help when people need it most, while also focusing on the practical support that can genuinely improve financial stability in the longer term."
"Our priority is to work with residents to maximise their incomes, manage bills, and reduce the risk of them falling into crisis again. Help is still very much there; it’s being offered in a way that’s more targeted and more sustainable."
Last year, the council distributed more than £500,000 through the Household Support Fund, supporting approximately 600 residents with £29,000 in same-day emergency funds, £11,000 for school uniforms, £120,000 for essential household items, and over £315,000 in shopping vouchers.
South Gloucestershire's One Stop Shops answered more than 200,000 calls, 20,000 emails, and 1,000 social media queries in the past year, ensuring comprehensive assistance for residents.
Applications can be made via the website and more information about support options can be found here.
Those unsure where to start can visit One Stop Shops in Kingswood, Patchway or Yate, or call 0800 953 7778 for assistance.
