Plans unveiled for six-month celebration honouring 200 years of Gloucester Docks
A partnership between Gloucester City Council. Gloucester Culture Trust and Canal & River Trust has announced ambitious plans for a six-month programme of celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of Gloucester Docks in 2027.
Originally opened in 1827, the Docks became a bustling terminus for the 16.5-mile Gloucester and Sharpness Ship Canal and formed a vital safe passage distinct from the Severn Estuary.
By allowing sea-going vessels to bypass the hazardous River Severn, the development transformed Gloucester into a new centre of trade, industry and global connection, shaping the city’s identity for generations.
Two centuries on, that legacy will be brought to life through an extensive six-month celebration focused on Gloucester’s people, heritage and connections to the world.
Running from Spring 2027, the programme will reflect on the city’s rich past while looking ahead to its future.
While the full programme is still being developed, the partnership has confirmed that the celebrations will feature a wide-ranging programme of festivals, events, creative projects and activities across the city.
Together, these will showcase Gloucester’s unique character, highlight hidden stories, and inspire new perspectives on what the city can become.
As part of the preparations, residents and visitors are invited to help name the celebrations.
Suggestions can be submitted via gloucester200.co.uk, with participants also able to opt into a prize draw to win a £50 Gloucester Gift Card.
A citizen panel will review submissions and announce the official name of the celebrations later in 2026.
The celebrations are being curated by a partnership made up of Canal & River Trust, Gloucester Culture Trust and Gloucester City Council, working with a wider group of funders, collaborators, supporters and community groups from across the city.
