Gloucestershire schoolchildren urged to check lights and reflectors for darker journeys
Council leader warns road safety is everyone's responsibility as the nights get darker
Everyone who uses the roads in Gloucestershire is being warned to take extra safety precautions as the mornings and evenings get darker.
School children are being encouraged to check they are visible and prepare for those dark commutes to and from school
We spoke to Linda Cohen, the cabinet member for education and skills at Gloucester County Council. She says that half term is the perfect time to check that you can be seen properly in the dark.
She said, ''If you don't do anything else this half term, check that you've got lights on your bike, if you go to school on a bike. If you walk to school and you've got black school uniform or a black rucksack, Have you got some sort of reflector?''
Linda is urging school children to taking great care when walking by roads in the dark but she says road safety at this time of year is everybody's responsibility.
Linda emphasised, ''We need everybody - whether you're a pedestrian, horse rider, on a scooter, or on bicycle or on a motorbike, or driving a car, to take responsibility for everyone on the road. That means slowing down and making sure you are seen.''
''Oh and dog walkers too, make sure your dog can be seen - that's very important'' Linda added.
