Properties evacuated in Cheltenham after suspected ammunition found

Several properties in Cheltenham town centre have been evacuated after suspected World War Two ammunition was found.

Police were called to Albion Street around 6am.

A cordon has been put in place and is expected to remain for several hours.

Gloucestershire police say the item is being assessed by bomb disposal experts.

In a statement, Gloucestershire Police said: "Several properties in Cheltenham town centre have been evacuated following a report that a suspected WW2 ammunition has been found.

"We were called to Albion Street at 6am today after a member of the public reported the item.

"A cordon has been put into place on Albion Street and will remain in place for several hours. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit have been informed so they can assess the item."
