Preferred bidder chosen to buy Gloucestershire Airport

Joint shareholders of the airport Gloucester City Council and Cheltenham Borough Council confirmed the news in a statement

A preferred bidder has been chosen to buy Gloucestershire Airport.

The airport in Staverton was put on the market again in June this year (2026) after a previous bid to buy the 375-acre site fell through.

Gloucester City Council and Cheltenham Borough Council, the joint shareholders of the airport, confirmed the news in a statement today (22 October).

The councils said the company has committed to maintaining the airport as a thriving centre for aviation.

They added it has also committed to supporting the many businesses based across site.

The process will now move into a period of due diligence.

The councils said all parties are subject to legal and commercial confidentiality requirements during this stage and this means no further details about the preferred bidder or the proposed transaction can be released at this time.

Councillor Rowena Hay, Leader of Cheltenham Borough Council, said: "This is excellent news for Gloucestershire and an important step towards securing the airport's long-term future. The selection of a preferred bidder committed to maintaining an operational airport provides a strong basis for protecting this important regional asset."

Andy Hearne, Director of Place, Assets and Regeneration at Gloucester City Council, said: "The airport is home to many businesses and plays an important role in the area's economy. We are pleased to have reached this significant stage in the process and to see a commitment to supporting the businesses based at the site and its continued operation as an airport."
