Gloucestershire Police prepares for the 2026 Cheltenham Festival
Enhanced safety measures to be in place for racegoers and visitors
The Cheltenham Festival is returning this week, from 10th to 13th March, and Gloucestershire Constabulary says it is implementing a robust operational plan to ensure a safe environment for both attendees and the community.
Their collaborations with the Jockey Club, South Western Ambulance Service, and Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service aim to maintain smooth operations throughout the event.
Neighbourhood-style Policing
Uniformed officers, both on foot and horseback, will provide visible patrols during the festival.
Additional resources such as armed officers, plain-clothed officers, and police drones are also part of the security measures.
Tackling Violence and Anti-social Behaviour
An enhanced community policing presence will monitor Cheltenham with officers conducting high visibility patrols and focusing on unacceptable behaviour and anti-social hotspots.
Project Vigilant aims to prevent sexual offences by having specially trained officers detect risky behaviours in the night-time economy.
Social media advertisements will encourage intervention in harassment situations using the STOP principle: Say Something, Tell Someone, Offer Support, Provide a diversion.
Combating Drug Use
Racegoers are advised that drug possession will not be tolerated, with potential consequences including eviction or arrest.
Security checks, detection dogs, and amnesty bins will be in place for controlling drug-related activities.
Drone Usage Restrictions
A restricted air space, prohibiting unauthorized drone flights, will be enforced over the Racecourse from 10.15am to 8pm during the festival days.
ITV Racing and police drones will have authorisation for aerial operations.
Travel and Safety Advice
Visitors are encouraged to plan their journeys, considering heavier traffic and potential delays.
Security checks will be conducted at site entry points, with vigilance encouraged among the public to report any suspicious activities.
Personal belongings should be secured using anti-theft technology and discreet handling.
Racegoers can report crimes or issues directly to officers or through emergency services as required.
