Drivers in Gloucestershire should prepare for travel delays as police escort abnormal loads across the county starting later this week.

A large electrical transformer and its components, totalling over 600 tonnes, will move from Sharpness Docks to Brockworth on selected days between 27th March and 2nd April.

The escort commences at around 9am each day from Sharpness, heading along unclassified roads, the B4066, A38, B4509, and onto the M5 at junction 14 for Falfield.

Traffic will be temporarily halted as the vehicles use a contraflow system to join the M5 at junction 14 northbound exit slip and exit on the northbound M5 at junction 11A onto the A417.

The journey proceeds via the A417 to the B4641, along Delta Way, and Hurricane Road, ending at Brockworth.

Vehicles involved will travel at only 12 miles per hour, requiring sections of roads to close while manoeuvred and Highways staff remove road furniture.

Motorists are advised to avoid these routes during escort times if possible, with anticipated severe delays, particularly on the M5 northbound and the A417 junction area.

Police appreciate the public’s cooperation and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
