Greyfriars Project's Phase 1 planning application submitted for Gloucester transformation
Plans include the relocation of Eastgate Market and refurbishment of historic sites

The planning application for Phase 1 of the ambitious Greyfriars Project in Gloucester has been officially submitted, marking a significant step towards revitalising one of the city’s most historic quarters.
The project aims to transform the area into a thriving hub where culture, creativity, business, and community intersect.
Phase 1 of Greyfriars will feature plans to relocate Eastgate Market to Bell Walk, refurbish Addison's Folly, and renovate the former Pavilion Bowls Club building.
Additionally, a new outdoor space will be created for public enjoyment.
Restoration funding agreements have been made for the Greyfriars Monument and Greyfriars House, further enhancing Gloucester’s heritage appeal.
The planning application, with reference number 26/00654/FUL, proposes a change of use to sui generis and internal reconfiguration of part of the Eastgate Shopping Centre's ground floor.
This will facilitate the relocation of Gloucester Market and the establishment of a food hall.
Associated external modifications include new pedestrian access points, replacement glazing, and refurbishment of the Pavilion to a sui generis use.
Improvements to public areas, landscaping, and infrastructure are also part of the plans.
The application, received on 20th July 2026 and validated on 26th August 2026, is now open for consultation until 22nd September 2026.
