Gloucestershire police officer cleared of common assault
Former inspector James Wyatt, from Cheltenham, had been charged in connection with an incident on 20 January 2022.
A police officer has been acquitted of common assault by beating after he appealed his conviction.
Former inspector James Wyatt, from Cheltenham, had been charged in connection with an incident on 20 January 2022.
It was alleged he had pushed a woman in Waitrose car park in Cheltenham, causing her to fall to the ground.
Mr Wyatt denied the charge and a District Judge at a hearing at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court on 16 January 2023 found him guilty and subsequently gave him a conditional discharge.
However, he chose to appeal the conviction and requested a re-trial, which took place at Redditch Magistrates' Court, acting as a crown court, on Friday 17 January.
A judge and two magistrates found him not guilty and therefore his previous conviction and sentence was overturned.
Mr Wyatt had most recently worked as a Force Incident Manager in the Control Room and had been suspended since the allegation was made in January 2022.
He faced an accelerated misconduct hearing in November 2024 for unrelated allegations.
The allegations amounted to gross misconduct and it was determined that he had breached the standards of professional behaviour.
He had resigned from the Force prior to the misconduct hearing, however he would have been dismissed without notice if he had still been a serving officer at the time, and he was added to the police barred list.
