A focused water safety campaign is underway in Gloucestershire, aiming to prevent accidents as the warmer months approach.

The Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service has reiterated water safety messages, encouraging people to enjoy the county’s lakes and rivers safely.

Yvette Greenhouse, Station Manager for Prevention, explained that while the campaign runs from 27th April to 3rd May, these messages are vital all year round due to local water risks.

The increase in water-related incidents during summer, attributed to the county's various inland water bodies such as rivers, lakes, and reservoirs.

While rivers and lakes might appear safe, they often conceal hazards like cold temperatures, sudden drop-offs, and biological hazards.

Similarly, reservoirs pose additional risks due to machinery, suction risks, and steep sides increasing the difficulty of exiting the water.

In case of emergencies the fire service are reccomending using the 'phone, float, throw' method.

This involves calling emergency services, helping the person float on their back, and throwing rescue equipment if available, rather than attempting to jump in and save them.

Cold water shock remains a significant risk in such situations, leading to involuntary gasps and panic.
