Gloucestershire fire and rescue service are issuing heat-related safety messages ahead of continued rising temperatures.

Although the county has seen some light rainfall recently many grassy and woodland areas are still dry and can be flammable.

Residents are being reminded to think about their surroundings when enjoying a BBQ in the sun.

Fire prevention manager Donna Potts told Greatest Hits Radio: “We are not stopping people from having a BBQ, that is absolutely not our aim.

“What we would ask is for people to do that safely.

“Keep children away from them for the first thing but keep some water nearby that you can use to put out the BBQ if it does get out of hand.”

They’re also reminding people that it’s not just flames that could start a fire and we have to be mindful about some of our household objects.

Donna said: “We know that other fire and rescue services have had to respond to fires in the home that have been started by mirrors.

“If you’ve got a mirror in the bathroom or the bedroom and it’s catching the light – you know it’s an old childhood experiment to try and put a mirror onto a piece of paper and it’ll singe the paper.

“So we would suggest that people just move things out of the way, keep them off the windowsills, keep them out of direct sun.”
